The Box Ghost

A Global Game Jam  2021 2D exploration platformer on Unity. Based on Schrodinger's Cat escaping the box.

Development took the course of three days.

Winner of best use of theme, best narrative, and best art.

Art Direction

The Box Ghost’s aesthetic is meant to cultivate psychedelic elements with a hint of a creepy delivery. While the main theme of the narrative calls for the paranormal, many assets and background art style was translated into a more illustration lense to give a light hearted feel. The visual touchstone chosen for The Box Ghost were sharp angles, textured assets, consistent use strong shadows and use of direction forces.

Background Art

Over the course of a 3 days production period I created five background pieces and 15+ asset pieces. My team provided me with the narrative, the boundaries of this years Global Game Jam theme and a general idea of how the characters were designed and animated so the art would be cohesive. I took on full responsibility and artistic decisions when it color and subject. I pulled inspiration from games like Limbo, Inside, and Little Nightmares to appeal to puzzle, platformer enthusiasts.

Asset Art

During production I worked closely with one of the writers who was responsible for world building behind assets that gave me hourly feed back on my work. I was given a description and the assets mechanic to start off drafting designs. I gave the assets a simple silhouette with inverted textures so they can stand out from the detailed backgrounds and give the player the indication that the asset can be interacted with.
